Radon gas is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can seep into buildings from the ground and pose a health risk to the occupants. According to the World Health Organization, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Therefore, it is important to prevent radon from entering buildings and to reduce its concentration to safe levels.
One of the ways to achieve this is to use a radon barrier, which is a type of membrane that blocks the passage of radon gas and water vapour. A radon barrier also serves as a damp proof membrane, which prevents moisture from damaging the structure and the interior of the building.
Novia 1600G Radon Barrier is an approved blown polythene material that is suitable for use as a radon barrier and a damp proof membrane in solid concrete ground floors that are not subject to hydrostatic pressure. It is a high-quality product that meets the requirements of the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and the national building regulations for radon protection. It is also UKCA approved to EN 13967 as a damp proof membrane.

Application

Handling and Storage
- Storage : Store in a dry and clean place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not fold or crease the gas membrane
- Install Care: Cover the membrane as soon as possible after installation with a minimum of 50mm screed
- Dry and Dust-Free Surface: Ensure the surface is clean and dry before installation to maintain effectiveness.
- Tape Application: Use Novia double-sided butyl tape for joints and edges, and aluminum foil tapes or metallized BOPP tape for a complete gas seal.
- Overlap Method: When joining membranes, create a 150mm overlap and use single-sided lap tape for a secure seal.
- Protective Measures: After installation, safeguard the radon barrier with a minimum 50mm screed for long-term protection.
