Kingspan pipe insulation sections have been developed to give optimum performance in terms of insulation efficiency, compressive strength, fire resistance, and most importantly, cost. It gives excellent value for money.

Phenolic pipe insulation is one of the most popular pipe lagging materials on the market alongside glasswool and rockwool insulation. However, compared to these two, phenolic pipe insulation has a vastly superior lower thermal conductivity. It will keep pipes warm or cold better than the vast majority of insulation materials in existence.

This characteristic allows for much thinner pipe insulation thicknesses than other materials would allow, which in turn means less space required within boxing-ins, ceiling voids and other areas where space is at a premium.

It's only really bested by Aerogel pipe insulation, which is not something that is widely available due to its cost and difficulty to install. Therefore it could be said that Kingspan pipe insulation is the best pipe lagging if judged by its ability to thermally insulate pipework alone. It is easy to install and works well on all kinds of pipework across project types.

Key Features & Benefits:

Thermal Performance:

  • Kingspan Pipe Insulation is the most thermally efficient insulation material commonly used for insulating pipes with a hermal conductivity of just 0.025 W/m·K (at 10°C mean in accordance with EN14314)
  • Low thermal conductivity allows Kooltherm pipe insulation to achieve higher standards of thermal efficiency, fire resistance and compressive strength than most other insulation materials.

Fire Performance:

Kingspan pipe Insulation has excellent fire resistance as detailed below.

  • When exposed to fire, the outer surface of this phenolic lagging develops a thick carbonaceous layer that limits heat generation and retards further flame spread.
  • Phenolic foam pipe insulation is provided with a densely cross-linked structure that makes them difficult to ignite.

Moisture Resistance:

Kingspan Kooltherm pipe insulation offers excellent moisture resistance:

  • Foil pipe insulation with a closed-cell structure offers high resistance to moisture ingress and permeation which protects pipes from moisture issues such as corrosion and adverse reactions.
  • Kooltherm sections have a high-performing outer foil face vapour barrier which prevents moisture from reaching the phenolic material within.

Environmental:

  • Kingspan pipe insulation is CFC/HCFC-free and has a low Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP and low Global Warming Potential (GWP).
  • Kooltherm holds the highest possible BRE Green Guide rating of A+ and is manufactured to a BS EN ISO 14001: 2004 scheme, qualifying for the Responsible Sourcing credit.

Value For Money:

  • Kingspan Kooltherm phenolic pipe insulation is long-lasting and durable. Due to its closed-cell nature, the thermal efficiency does not deteriorate with time. So Kingspan Kooltherm will bring you long-lasting energy savings.
  • Also, due to its very fine makeup, a 15mm thick Kingspan Kooltherm would have almost the same thermal efficiency as say a 20mm thick fibreglass or mineral wool pipe insulation. This means you will need a lesser amount of Kingspan Kooltherm when compared to other pipe-insulating materials. Not just pipe insulation, you will also save on cladding insulation like PIB or metal cladding, especially in larger installations.

Applications:

  • Kingspan pipe insulation can be used to insulate all types of pipework including mild steel, stainless steel, carbon steel, copper, multiplex and plastic pipework.
  • Kooltherm is ideal to insulate pipework in HVAC applications or building services. They are used in all types of building work - residential, commercial or industrial.

We have a video on our Youtube Channel you can watch called Everything You Need To Know About Phenolic Pipe Insulation

What is Kingspan kooltherm phenolic pipe insulation?

Kooltherm pipe insulation is a phenolic foam, rigid pipe section supplied in 1M lengths by Kingspan. This phenolic tube is known to give outstanding thermal insulation, fire resistance and moisture protection to any and all types of pipework.

This high performance pipe insulation is one of the most sought-after pipe sections by most laggers after Armaflex and Rockwool lagging as it is the thinnest and most thermally efficient pipe insulation available.

Below are some reasons that support this claim :

Thermal Conductivity:

Kingspan Kooltherm insulation has a low thermal conductivity of 0.025 W/m*K, making it the most thermally efficient pipe lagging available. Low thermal conductivity means this phenolic foam pipe lagging does not allow heat to pass through its fabric easily.

Additionally, this pipe insulation is supplied with a foil vapour barrier that not only stops the entry of water into the application but also reflects radiant heat thereby adding to its thermal performance.

Also, since Kingspan phenolic insulation works most efficiently in the temperature range of -50°C to +110°C, they function as the ideal pipe wrap, not only to maintain the temperature of hot water but also to protect pipes from freezing.

This means you save on the energy otherwise spent to reheat water AND also save the expenses incurred by freezing pipes. In short, with the all-around performance of kooltherm pipe, you get savings all around!

kingspan pipe insulationMake:

Kingspan Kooltherm is made with phenolic foam. But, what is phenolic insulation or phenolic foam insulation?

Phenolic insulation is crafted through a process where a plastic foam serves as the insulating base between two sheets of flexible tissue. It has a high concentration of sealed cells and an intricate cell configuration. Rigid phenolic insulation is made by combining high solids with phenolic resin and a surface or foaming agent.

Phenolic foam is an insulating material utilised in a range of applications where higher thermal performance, fire and moisture resistance are important performance criteria. Phenolic foam insulation is usually lightweight, rigid but easy to install.

Fire Resistance:

Kingspan Kooltherm’s fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic core ensures excellent fire performance. This foam pipe insulation has a densely cross-linked structure that makes them difficult to ignite. Because of the superior fire performance of kooltherm, it can be used for insulation of pipework in building services

Due to its outstanding fire resistance, Kooltherm pipe lagging achieves a fire rating of BL,s1,d0, meaning it contributes little to the flames, emits little smoke, and doesn't produce flaming droplets. If these pipe insulation sections catch fire, then the outer surface forms a thick layer of carbonaceous material that reduces heat production and slows the spread of the flame. It has excellent fire and smoke performance.

Kooltherm insulation is Water-Resistant:

Due to its closed-cell structure, phenolic foam pipe lagging from Kingspan Insulation restricts moisture ingress. What's more, they also have foil facings on the outside, that act as an additional moisture barrier to the application.

Also, pipes insulated using Kingspan phenolic pipe insulation are completely protected from thier surroundings. This increases the dew point, thereby restricting keeping condensation and pipe sweating.

Therefore, this high performance pipe insulation, not only prevents moisture from the surroundings from entering the pipes or the application but also stops mould growth and prevents condensation. This in turn protects pipes from corrosion.

Kingspan Pipe Insulation is Environmentally-Friendly:

The BRE Green Guide has rated Kooltherm A+, which is the highest possible rating. Their manufacturing process does not release any harmful gases that cause ozone depletion or cause global warming in any way. Silver pipe lagging is also made using sustainably sourced materials.

Kooltherm technical pipe insulation is also rated Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort Gold, which means this foam pipe lagging does not harm the surroundings or its air quality in any way.

Best pipe lagging for confined spaces:

As mentioned above, Kingspan pipe insulation is the thinnest and most efficient product in the market today. If you have to insulate pipes in a constricted space, where there isn’t much room for pipe wrap, then Kooltherm is the way to go.

Suitable for all types of pipework:kingspan Kooltherm

Kooltherm pipe insulation can be used to insulate all types of pipework. The insulation is suitable for mild steel, carbon and stainless steel, copper pipes, multiplex and plastic pipework.

Also with an operating temperature of -50°C to +110°C, this phenolic rigid pipe insulation could be the only pipe covering you will need for your project. Kooltherm pipe insulation is suitable to insulate both heating and chilled water lines.

Kooltherm pipe insulation is available in a variety of thicknesses to accommodate incoming and outgoing pipes ranging from 15mm to 273mm. It is an excellent choice for high-efficiency and high-performance applications such as HVAC, refrigeration, and process applications.

Its closed cell structure makes it extremely resistant to condensation and moisture. Moreover, Kooltherm pipe insulation is available in an aluminium foil facing, which provides an excellent foil vapour barrier jacket.

Easy to Install:

Kingspan Kooltherm pipe insulation is available in various thicknesses and is much lighter than mineral wool. This insulation is suitable for all types of pipework, including steel, copper, multiplex, and plastic pipes. It might be right but it is a lightweight silver pipe insulation that is easily cut with a utility knife.

The premium performance of the thinnest and most efficient Kooltherm pipe lagging insulates pipes like no other!

It is CFC-free

Insulating pipes with Kooltherm pipe insulation range is the best thing you can do for the pipes. In addition, it is CFC and HFC-free and meets the strictest safety standards. Its slim-line design and wide range of thicknesses make it suitable for a variety of pipework applications.

The Kooltherm insulation comprises sections of kooltherm prefabricated to fit a variety of pipe diameters and insulation thicknesses. The insulating materials are CFC-free and non-fibrous and offer zero Ozone Depletion Potential and minimal Global Warming Potential. They are suitable for both hot and cold services.

Kingspan Kooltherm is unaffected by air infiltration

Kooltherm pipe insulation is a highly efficient insulation material with very low thermal conductivity. Its thermal conductivity is only 0.021 W/mK at 10degC. This makes it one of the thinnest and most energy-efficient insulation materials available. It is also CFC-free and has zero Global Warming Potential, making it an eco-friendly choice for HVAC applications.

The closed cell structure of Kooltherm Pipe Insulation helps reduce heat transfer from pipework, and its low VOC content makes it ideal for tight spaces. It also features minimal point contacts and a small solid-to-void volume ratio. In addition, the insulation is filled with a high-performing CFC/HCFC-free blowing agent. As a result, air infiltration does not affect Kooltherm pipe insulation.

Another great feature of this premium performance pipe insulation is its outstanding fire resistance. Its dense cross-linked structure creates a carbonaceous layer that limits the spread of flame and heat in case of a fire. It is also lightweight, making it easy to install. And because it has a very low thermal conductivity, it is also ideal for use in confined spaces.

kooltherm insulationHow to choose Kingspan kooltherm phenolic foam Pipe Insulation Online?

H&V pipe insulation by Kingspan is available in 1M lengths. Kooltherm pipe insulation comprises sections ranging in thickness and size. If the title of the pipe lagging online reads 1M x 15mm x 25mm, it usually means that the pipe section is 1M long, it should fit a pipe with a 15mm outer diameter and it is a 25mm thick pipe lagging.

To choose the right Kingspan kooltherm phenolic foam pipe insulation for your application you will first need to know the type of pipe you are insulating and also its size or outer diameter. Copper pipes are thinner, so if the pipe size is 15mm, a 15mm pipe section will work for your application.

Steel pipes however are slightly thicker. So if the pipe you are looking to insulate is 15mm steel, then you will, need a 21mm foil pipe lagging for your assembly

To help you choose the right Kingspan foil backed pipe insulation we have the pipe size chart on this page. For more information on the product, you can refer to the Kingspan kooltherm product data sheet also available with us. However, If you need more advice or have any questions, our experts are just a call away.

How to install Kingspan Pipe Insulation?

1. Firstly, you need to ensure you have the proper size of the pipe lagging. As mentioned before, note the pipe material and size before you buy pipe insulation online or at a local store.

2. For straight runs: Measure the length of the pipe you have to insulate. Wipe the pipe surface clean and free of any oil or debris. Cut the Kingspan Kooltherm section using a sharp utility knife and slide it over the pipe. Use foil tape or adhesive to seal the ends of the insulation together.

3. To create a sharp 90-degree bend, cut the ends of the two pipe insulation tube lengths at a 45-degree angle. Both lengths should be fastened to the pipe with their 45° ends coming together at the right-angle 90° curve. Use foil tape to seal the junction.

4. T-shaped bends: First, trim a 90-degree wedge out of the main portion of pipe insulation to form a piece of insulation that covers a T branch. To create a point, cut the tube's end that will be connected at a 90° angle at two 45° angles. After that, insert the pointed end into the main tube's 90° cutout. To seal the joint, put the foil tape around the T-piece

Do not forget to seal the ends of the h+v pipe insulation together using foil tape. Also, to complete the installation, use pipe identification labels or Pipe IDs to improve workplace safety and for the easy identification of content in the pipework. This is especially applicable to commercial or industrial pipe insulation.

If you are unsure of the thickness of insulation you need or the right pipe size for you, all you have to do is contact us via email, WhatsApp, chat or phone before placing the order online.

Is Kingspan phenolic foam Pipe insulation acoustic?

Phenolic foam is known to have little to no effect on sound waves. It does not absorb sound waves like mineral wool or fibreglass pipe insulation sections. Therefore Kingspan kooltherm is not the right product for you, if you are looking for some acoustic pipe insulation.

Can you use Kingspan pipe lagging for outdoor pipe insulation?

Kooltherm insulation can be used to insulate pipes outdoors. However, you will need appropriate pipe insulation cladding to protect both the insulating material and pipe from damage and extreme conditions. You can clad kooltherm lagging you can use ProClad, PIB insulation, or KlasseClad pipe jacketing system
