What is Kingspan kooltherm phenolic pipe insulation?
Kooltherm pipe insulation is a phenolic foam, rigid pipe section supplied in 1M lengths by Kingspan. This phenolic tube is known to give outstanding thermal insulation, fire resistance and moisture protection to any and all types of pipework.
This high performance pipe insulation is one of the most sought-after pipe sections by most laggers after Armaflex and Rockwool lagging as it is the thinnest and most thermally efficient pipe insulation available.
Below are some reasons that support this claim :
Thermal Conductivity:
Kingspan Kooltherm insulation has a low thermal conductivity of 0.025 W/m*K, making it the most thermally efficient pipe lagging available. Low thermal conductivity means this phenolic foam pipe lagging does not allow heat to pass through its fabric easily.
Additionally, this pipe insulation is supplied with a foil vapour barrier that not only stops the entry of water into the application but also reflects radiant heat thereby adding to its thermal performance.
Also, since Kingspan phenolic insulation works most efficiently in the temperature range of -50°C to +110°C, they function as the ideal pipe wrap, not only to maintain the temperature of hot water but also to protect pipes from freezing.
This means you save on the energy otherwise spent to reheat water AND also save the expenses incurred by freezing pipes. In short, with the all-around performance of kooltherm pipe, you get savings all around!
Make:
Kingspan Kooltherm is made with phenolic foam. But, what is phenolic insulation or phenolic foam insulation?
Phenolic insulation is crafted through a process where a plastic foam serves as the insulating base between two sheets of flexible tissue. It has a high concentration of sealed cells and an intricate cell configuration. Rigid phenolic insulation is made by combining high solids with phenolic resin and a surface or foaming agent.
Phenolic foam is an insulating material utilised in a range of applications where higher thermal performance, fire and moisture resistance are important performance criteria. Phenolic foam insulation is usually lightweight, rigid but easy to install.
Fire Resistance:
Kingspan Kooltherm’s fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic core ensures excellent fire performance. This foam pipe insulation has a densely cross-linked structure that makes them difficult to ignite. Because of the superior fire performance of kooltherm, it can be used for insulation of pipework in building services
Due to its outstanding fire resistance, Kooltherm pipe lagging achieves a fire rating of BL,s1,d0, meaning it contributes little to the flames, emits little smoke, and doesn't produce flaming droplets. If these pipe insulation sections catch fire, then the outer surface forms a thick layer of carbonaceous material that reduces heat production and slows the spread of the flame. It has excellent fire and smoke performance.
Kooltherm insulation is Water-Resistant:
Due to its closed-cell structure, phenolic foam pipe lagging from Kingspan Insulation restricts moisture ingress. What's more, they also have foil facings on the outside, that act as an additional moisture barrier to the application.
Also, pipes insulated using Kingspan phenolic pipe insulation are completely protected from thier surroundings. This increases the dew point, thereby restricting keeping condensation and pipe sweating.
Therefore, this high performance pipe insulation, not only prevents moisture from the surroundings from entering the pipes or the application but also stops mould growth and prevents condensation. This in turn protects pipes from corrosion.
Kingspan Pipe Insulation is Environmentally-Friendly:
The BRE Green Guide has rated Kooltherm A+, which is the highest possible rating. Their manufacturing process does not release any harmful gases that cause ozone depletion or cause global warming in any way. Silver pipe lagging is also made using sustainably sourced materials.
Kooltherm technical pipe insulation is also rated Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort Gold, which means this foam pipe lagging does not harm the surroundings or its air quality in any way.
Best pipe lagging for confined spaces:
As mentioned above, Kingspan pipe insulation is the thinnest and most efficient product in the market today. If you have to insulate pipes in a constricted space, where there isn’t much room for pipe wrap, then Kooltherm is the way to go.

How to install Kingspan Pipe Insulation?
1. Firstly, you need to ensure you have the proper size of the pipe lagging. As mentioned before, note the pipe material and size before you buy pipe insulation online or at a local store.
2. For straight runs: Measure the length of the pipe you have to insulate. Wipe the pipe surface clean and free of any oil or debris. Cut the Kingspan Kooltherm section using a sharp utility knife and slide it over the pipe. Use foil tape or adhesive to seal the ends of the insulation together.
3. To create a sharp 90-degree bend, cut the ends of the two pipe insulation tube lengths at a 45-degree angle. Both lengths should be fastened to the pipe with their 45° ends coming together at the right-angle 90° curve. Use foil tape to seal the junction.
4. T-shaped bends: First, trim a 90-degree wedge out of the main portion of pipe insulation to form a piece of insulation that covers a T branch. To create a point, cut the tube's end that will be connected at a 90° angle at two 45° angles. After that, insert the pointed end into the main tube's 90° cutout. To seal the joint, put the foil tape around the T-piece
Do not forget to seal the ends of the h+v pipe insulation together using foil tape. Also, to complete the installation, use pipe identification labels or Pipe IDs to improve workplace safety and for the easy identification of content in the pipework. This is especially applicable to commercial or industrial pipe insulation.
